Japanese Knotweed alert!

A clump of Japanese knotweed has been spotted just on the edge of the Birchall Road. allotment site. This pernicious weed is highly invasive and action needs to be taken quickly to prevent its spread. Fortunately the patch near our allotment site is currently outside the boundary fence and the committee are taking action to contact the owners of the garages off Clare Avenue behind which the weed is currently growing.

Originally a garden plant, it now gets everywhere and is a nuisance particularly as its strong roots can break through concrete and damage buildings. Although it is not illegal to have it growing on your land, it is highly undesirable. Disposal of Japanese Knotweed must be done carefully as it is classified as “controlled waste”.
